Fathers are very important. We are reminded of this as we celebrate Father’s Day this time every year. Tomorrow is no different. For those of us who are fortunate to have a loving father figure in our lives, it is a happy time. For children who are growing up without one, it is a painful and discouraging reminder of the crucial influence that is missing in their lives. Luckily, there are ways to help these children benefit from having male role models in their lives. Yes, YOU can be that person...even if you've never been a Dad!
While nothing can replace a father’s love, a positive role model can be a teacher, confidant, example and friend to a child whose father is no longer present in their lives. There are many mentor organizations that coordinate volunteers with children and youth in need of a positive role model. Of these, Big Brothers and Big Sisters is one of my favorites.
Many of us have heard of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization. For over 100 years, they have been working to coordinate adult volunteers (“Bigs”) with children (“Littles”), ages six through 18 in communities across the country. Mentors work with parents to instill quality values in underprivileged children. Participants are encouraged to foster higher aspirations, greater confidence, better relationships and educational success, while avoiding risky behaviors.
National research has shown that positive relationships between Littles and their Bigs have a direct and measurable impact on children’s lives. By participating in these mentor programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are:
More confident in their schoolwork performance
Able to get along better with their families
46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
27% less likely to begin using alcohol
52% less likely to skip school
All of these things are huge in the life of any child! We are very lucky to have an active Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization as part of our Culver community. Hopefully, you had a chance to attend the annual fundraiser on Friday evening at the Culver Academies. Always something special for the attendees and a great way to support a wonderful organization.
If you want to be a part of the important work that the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization and volunteers are doing, visit their website at: www.bbbs.org There you can enroll a child who would benefit from a mentor, volunteer as a mentor yourself, or donate to this amazing organization.
